Cao Pengfei said that at present, there are more enterprises in the field of hydrogen health in PEM electrolytic water hydrogen production, of which more focus on the production of small electrolytic cells and hydrogen health equipment; In contrast, there are still fewer domestic manufacturers in the field of industrial hydrogen production.


Kerun New Materials focuses on the research and development and industrialization of proton exchange membranes, and has long laid out two major markets of hydrogen health and industrial hydrogen production in the field of electrolytic water hydrogen production.


At present, Kerun new materials products can be divided into four categories according to the application direction: perfluorinated ion membrane for flow batteries, composite proton exchange membrane for fuel cells, proton exchange membrane for PEM electrolytic water, and ion exchange membrane for other subdivided industries.


Among them, Kerun New Materials launched the NEPEM-W series membranes 115W, 116W and 117W membranes applied in the field of hydrogen health in 2019; In terms of industrial hydrogen production, the mature products of Kerun New materials mainly include NEPEM-115 and 117 series films, which have electrochemical performance and durability at the same level compared with commercial imported films of the same specifications.

Cao Pengfei revealed that the company is developing new products in the field of industrial hydrogen production, which are still in durability testing and are expected to be officially released in the second half of this year or the first half of next year. The new product adopts a new process, formula and new composite structure to achieve thickness reduction while ensuring the high voltage resistance, long life and durability of the film, which can take into account the advantages of high current density, high energy efficiency and low cost.


At the same time, in terms of production capacity, the company's existing overall production capacity is 300,000 square meters, of which flow batteries and electrolytic water hydrogen production share 200,000 square meters, and fuel cells are 100,000 square meters.


In addition, Kerun new materials Huaian factory planning for 5 million square meters/year, the current phase 1 million square meters/annual production line construction has been completed, into the equipment commissioning stage, is expected to be in May, June this year, the first phase of the new production line can be put into use. Kerun New Materials is also planning to build a new production line in Suzhou this year.


Although the current green hydrogen industry is thriving, it still faces some shackles in development.


In terms of standards, Cao Pengfei believes: "Relative to the fuel cell industry, green hydrogen standards are currently lacking. The national standard for fuel cells was released in 2009, but there is currently no standard for proton exchange membranes for water electrolysis, and there is no relevant standard for other core materials (catalysts, membrane electrodes, bipolar plates, etc.). At present, Kerun New Materials hopes to participate in and promote the development of relevant domestic standards."


In terms of cost, compared with alkaline water hydrogen production, the development of PEM electrolytic water hydrogen production is greatly affected by the cost reduction of core materials (membranes, catalysts, bipolar plates).


Cao Pengfei said: "The road to cost reduction in the future of the green hydrogen industry still needs the joint efforts of the middle and bottom of the industrial chain, and it is not a single link." If the cost of PEM can be reduced to between 1.5 times and 2 times that of ALK, then PEM water electrolysis for hydrogen production will be more competitive."
